Non-Birth Parent Meet-Up

Join Restore Midwifery and LGBTQ Perinatal Wellness for this monthly offering!

Pregnancy and parenthood, although miraculous and absolutely wonderful, can also be a challenging time - especially in the beginning, and it is common to feel overwhelmed, sad, and lonely, amongst many other things. As the non-birth parent in a queer relationship, there are likely additional specific challenges that may arise such as jealousy over genetic or biological connection, bonding issues, lack of recognition by society as a fully legitimate parent, extended family judgement, etc. There are many resources and a plethora of support groups available for pregnant and nursing moms, as well as cisgendered dads, but our particular niche has a scarcity of options.

Whether your partner is currently expecting, you are a new parent, or a seasoned one, we welcome you. This is your space to bond with other non-birth parents whether you are seeking support, or just looking for community, friendship, or a simply a night that's about you.

Facilitator: Joelle Schwartz is a "Mamo" who helped to raise her 18 year old step-son, and has a 1.5 year old son with her wife of 7 years. Joelle started and has facilitated the popular Non-Birth Parent meet-up at Natural Resources in San Francisco. After many requests to offer something similar in the East Bay, she collaborated to create this second branch. Joelle previously, was an active facilitator in a queer family building and conception group called Baby Buds for for several years, and is a community organizer and activist. Joelle is an Art Director for a global sustainability company, and enjoys rock climbing, cooking, sewing, and hiking in her free time. She identifies as a white ally, a vegan, an empath, and an INFJ.

*To create an environment where you can get the most out of this group we ask that you leave the kiddos at home. However, if you find yourself in a bind and have no childcare options you may bring them along.

Meetup is FREE although donations $5 and under will be accepted to help cover fees.
